letters from underwood
a story in pictures

Letters from Underwood will display in the Sequential Art Gallery in Portland, OR for the month of November, 2008.

"Assuming the role of both painter and storyteller, Katy Ellis O'Brien has created a series of acrylic-on-panel renditions of the emotional journey of three animal characters who discover a pair of human foundlings. In her colorful cartoon style, the artist shows her characters reaching heights of trauma and ecstasy against the idyllic backdrop of a rural village. The result is a mix of peculiarity and pathos, as with each image the viewer learns more about the characters and their situation."

This series of 44 narrative paintings was completed over the course of nine months and exhibited in the Evergreen gallery in May 2007. The images are arranged in the order they are intended to be viewed. Click the thumbnail to view the full image.

Here are some installation shots from the May 2007 exhibition, demonstrating how the series is arranged. The small silhouetted images on plywood and serve as separators or "chapterheads" for the story.
